‘God Help the Girl’ poster design WIP part 2.

For the painting process I decided to stick to a digital workflow using Photoshop and Illustrator CS3 with my trusty Wacom graphire 4 tablet. My creative direction was simple incorporating an opaque flat colour approach with little or no airbrushing. I sampled colour swatches from 4 different palettes with a high saturation value and bright hues.

I wanted to repeat the use of a single colour and draw the viewer’s eye towards her face, as seen on the lips and head scarf for Eve played by Emily Browning. The colour work was applied using a slightly modified hard edged brush to preserve a clean finish behind the line-art. For the character line-art check out 'God Help the Girl' WIP part 1 http://yuyanda.blogspot.co.uk/2014/08/god-help-girl-wip-work-in-progress.html

For the leopard print dress on Cass played by Hannah Murray, I decided to isolate the dark areas of the pattern and trace it using Illustrator CS3 before adding any colour or brushwork in Photoshop CS3. A section of the dress was matted in as it was cropped from the photograph. Cass’s fashionable style reflects her free spirited character. I sampled over 30 colours to create her dress and shoes.

James played by Olly Alexander is a musician and rarely seen without his guitar so I decided to portray him in this light. The guitar’s structure comprises of 22 layers alone including textures and reflective brushwork. I sampled 76 colours in total and only used a handful to create the look and feel of his guitar.

ChitChatClick's Sharnie character design.

I was recently commissioned to create promotional poster material for a student film from Bournemouth University (UK) called ChitChatClick. The character design shows how the actors real likeness is captured through modern 3D animated 'cartoon' features. I also looked at Jason Brooks 'Fashionista' drawings for style and exaggeration. I gave her a contemporary high street sense of fashion referencing brands from H&M to NEXT to Debenhams which best reflected Sharnie's personality. Mobile phones play an integral role in the screenplay so a level of interaction with the accessory was critical, referencing Apple's IPhone for an authentic look. The story revolves around four modern women who communicate via mobile but when they finally meet face to face, all is not as it seems and things turn for the worse! Its short but sweet. Pencil media on 140gsm paper with subtle brush work. Mechanical Pencils. A4 light box. Rulers. Erasers.
